West Elk Soccer Association Registration/Team Policies 2018/2019
You are encouraged to register by the published registration deadline in order to secure a spot on the league travel team. All participants who register after the registration deadline will only receive a spot on the league team roster if the roster has not yet been filled. If the roster is full, you will have the option to be on the practice squad. Registration will take place prior to spring and fall seasons.
Age Group Policy:
WESA uses the United States Youth Soccer (USYS) approved age groups for ALL players unless special circumstances warrant playing up or down. Playing down is only considered for 8th graders that are old for their class or for kids with an approved medical waiver. Playing up is only considered when a child is close to the cutoff date and in the appropriate grade. Any requests to have a child play up or down must be submitted in writing to the Program Director for approval.

Team Assignments/Player Evaluation Policy:
After much discussion, the WESA board has decided to change the way teams are split at the U12 and U14 age groups. Our goal is to always try and follow our mission statement and program philosophy and to place player development at the core of everything we do as a club. We continue to work to find appropriate levels of competition for our teams, which is often a struggle in our remote area. As such, we have made the following changes to the way we will conduct player evaluations and divide teams. We strongly believe this will give our teams the chance to face more appropriate competition in tournaments as well as benefit our players in the fall league season as other towns in our league have started to split using similar formulas. We want to thank the parents and coaches who reached out to the board and provided us with very constructive feedback and suggestions, which helped us tremendously in shaping this policy.
TEAM ASSIGNMENTS: When there are enough players to field more than one team in a given age group and category, WESA will use the following guidelines to create teams:
U12 Age Group (birth years 2007 and 2008)
Players will be divided strictly by birth year. In the case that this split results in uneven team numbers, we will then look at birth month to place players on the appropriate team.
U14/U15 Age Group (birth years 2004, 2005, 2006)
This age group typically involves 3 birth years. 2004 birth year will generally be placed on the Black team, with placement on the white team made on an exception basis. 2005 birth year, as well as 7th graders born in 2006, will undergo player evaluations to determine appropriate team placement. 2006 birth year 6th graders will automatically be placed on the white team. Note that we expect ALL players will participate in the evaluations, as coaches and evaluators will use those sessions to determine starting positions and playing ability for the upcoming season.
NOTE that in spring season, kids may be moved up or down based on registration numbers.
For the Fall 2018 season, player evaluations for the U14/15 boys will take place the week of August 13th, one week prior to the start of the season. We will send out exact details of those sessions soon.
